Creating Custom Widget Areas

Heads up! Make sure Easy Custom Sidebars is installed first!

Please make sure you have Easy Custom Sidebars installed and activated before creating any custom widget area. If you haven’t already done so, you still can install this plugin before proceeding to the following steps.

Easy Custom Sidebars is a highly recommended plugin that allows you to replace any widget areas in your theme without any coding. You can even replace more than one widget area on the same page! This plugin integrates with the Customizer so you can preview your custom widget areas on your site in realtime. To replace widget areas, go to Appearance > Theme Sidebars.

Creating a New Widget Area

To create a new widget area, you use the same steps you would a standard WordPress menu. First, you will need to create new widget area. Click the create a new sidebar link, give the widget area a name, and click the Create Sidebar button. Then select the widget area to replace, under Sidebar Properties.

Adding Items

Once your widget area is created, you can choose items like posts, pages, post tags, categories, from the left column to add to the widget area. If you have created custom post types or custom taxonomies those can also be added. If you don’t see your custom post types or taxonomies, look under the Screen Options to make sure the related checkbox is enabled.

The default widget area will be replaced for each added item. You can choose to replace a widget area for all your pages/posts, for a selected few or for one page/post only.

When you have finished building your custom widget area, make sure you click the Save Sidebar button.

Replacing the Widget Area

You can create multiple custom widget area and replace any sidebar from your theme. Please make sure you have selected a widget area in Sidebar to Replace, under Sidebar Properties after your items are added.
